Position: Staff Attorney

Location: Lagos, Nigeria
 Job Type: Full-Time
Qualification: LLB, BL, MBA, MSc, or MA
Experience: Minimum of 5 years
 Salary Range: ₦150,000 – ₦200,000 per month

Job Summary

JEI is seeking a committed and passionate Staff Attorney with solid experience in civil litigation, criminal defense, and alternative dispute resolution. The successful candidate will work closely with JEI’s legal team, community paralegals, and grassroots movements to advance legal empowerment and access to justice for people living in slums, informal settlements, and other vulnerable communities in Lagos and Port Harcourt.

This role requires creativity, integrity, and a deep belief in using the law as a tool for social change.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide grassroots legal aid and education to marginalized populations.
  • Work with community paralegals to deliver justice services in urban poor areas.
  • Draft legal processes, file cases, and represent clients in court.
  • Conduct legal research for strategic litigation and advocacy efforts.
  • Supervise and train community paralegals in both Lagos and Port Harcourt.
  • Support project management and contribute to JEI’s advocacy initiatives.

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Minimum 5 years of professional experience in civil and criminal law practice.
  • Current admission to the Nigerian Bar.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply legal skills for social transformation.
  • Excellent legal writing, research, and advocacy skills.
  • Proven ability to train or teach others effectively.
  • Experience in human rights law, land law, or NGO project management is an asset.
  • Familiarity with ECOWAS Court or African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights litigation is a plus.
  • Fluency in Pidgin English required; knowledge of Yoruba, Hausa, or Egun is an advantage.
