The WASH Sector NGO Co-Coordinator will work closely with UNICEF, WASH Sector partners, and humanitarian stakeholders to strengthen coordination, information sharing, preparedness, and advocacy for a timely and effective WASH response across North-East Nigeria.

Purpose of the Position

The purpose of this role is to support inclusive and effective WASH Sector coordination by:

  • Facilitating meaningful engagement of NGO partners (national and international)
  • Strengthening information management and joint analysis
  • Translating field realities into clear coordination actions
  • Supporting principled advocacy and preparedness for humanitarian risks such as flooding, cholera outbreaks, and displacement

Key Responsibilities and Duties

1. Coordination and Partner Engagement

The WASH Sector NGO Co-Coordinator will:

  • Co-chair WASH Sector coordination meetings alongside UNICEF
  • Prepare structured meeting agendas, ensure timely documentation, and track follow-up on agreed action points
  • Maintain regular engagement with WASH partners, including INGOs, national NGOs, and local organizations
  • Promote inclusive participation and amplify NGO perspectives within coordination platforms
  • Support field-level coordination across BAY States, including links with State, LGA, and government coordination mechanisms
  • Encourage collaboration to minimize duplication and improve technical and geographic coverage

2. Information Management and Joint Analysis

Key responsibilities include:

  • Supporting partner reporting and consolidating sector-wide information on activities, coverage, gaps, and constraints
  • Promoting data quality, consistency, and timely information sharing
  • Supporting joint needs analysis, gap mapping, and risk assessments
  • Translating analysis into concise coordination updates, briefing notes, and actionable recommendations

3. Planning, Preparedness and Technical Support

The role will also support:

  • Sector planning processes and alignment with agreed WASH strategies, standards, and guidelines
  • Preparedness and contingency planning for priority humanitarian risks in BAY States
  • Capacity strengthening of partners through technical guidance, tools, trainings, and workshops
  • Sharing best practices and lessons learned to enhance sector performance

4. Representation and Advocacy Support

The WASH Sector NGO Co-Coordinator will:

  • Represent NGO perspectives in WASH Sector and inter-sector coordination forums
  • Support evidence-based advocacy by consolidating partner inputs on key priorities and operational constraints
  • Promote accountable, community-informed, and principled humanitarian coordination practices
  • Uphold humanitarian principles, neutrality, and inclusivity in all coordination processes

Required Qualifications and Experience

Education

  • Advanced university degree (MBA, MSc, MA) in WASH, Public Health, Engineering, or a related field
  • Equivalent professional experience may be considered

Professional Experience

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in humanitarian WASH programming in emergency or complex contexts
  • At least 2 years’ experience in coordination or coordination-heavy roles (cluster/sector, consortium, or multi-partner platforms)
  • Demonstrated experience facilitating meetings, building consensus, and managing diverse stakeholders
  • Experience supporting needs assessments, gap analysis, preparedness, and response planning
  • Previous experience working in North-East Nigeria or similar humanitarian contexts is an advantage

Skills and Competencies

  • Strong facilitation, negotiation, and relationship-management skills
  • Excellent analytical and writing abilities
  • Solid understanding of humanitarian coordination systems and WASH standards
  • Strong digital skills (spreadsheets, presentations, collaboration platforms)
  • High integrity, diplomacy, and ability to maintain neutrality

Language Requirements

  • Fluency in English (written and spoken) is required
