The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) is hiring a Finance Adviser – Internal Controls to strengthen financial compliance, accountability, and anti-corruption systems across its operations in Nigeria. About the Role

The Finance Adviser (Internal Controls) will oversee compliance practices for NRC Nigeria, ensuring donor-funded activities follow internal policies, donor rules, and global audit standards. You will act as a key compliance focal point, providing assessments, training, and risk-mitigation guidance across various departments.

Key Responsibilities

Core Duties

  • Ensure NRC Nigeria adheres to the NRC Finance Handbook, donor requirements, and audit standards.
  • Maintain strict compliance with internal financial processes and national regulatory obligations.
  • Deliver staff training on anti-corruption procedures, risk mitigation, and compliance guidelines.
  • Produce regular compliance reports, analysis, and actionable recommendations.
  • Lead implementation of NRC’s anti-corruption policy across all field offices.
  • Conduct spot checks and documentation reviews to ensure adherence to SOPs.
  • Serve as the focal point for donor financial audits, coordinating data and follow-up actions.
  • Identify, assess, and mitigate financial risks across the country programme.
  • Contribute to advocacy aiming to protect the rights of IDPs and returnees.

What You Will Bring (Requirements)

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience as an Auditor, Finance Officer, or Compliance Manager (preferably in humanitarian/NGO settings).
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business Studies, or related field (required).
  • Professional certifications such as ICAN, ACCA, CIMA (an added advantage).
  • Master’s degree in a finance-related field (desirable).
  • Strong experience working in complex and high-risk environments.
  • Proven track record of delivering compliance and audit outcomes.
  • Strong leadership and people-management skills.
  • Proficiency in modern accounting software and tools.
  • Excellent English communication skills (spoken and written).
  • Knowledge of Nigeria’s humanitarian context.
  • Understanding of local languages in Northeast Nigeria, particularly Hausa.
  • Experience with NGO programme start-ups or exits is an advantage.
